About Dr. Larry R Thompson
Larry Thompson became the sixth President of Ringling School of Art and
Design in Sarasota, Florida on July 1, 1999. Ringling is a private, independent, four-year
college of visual arts and design.

Prior to coming to Ringling, Thompson was the first President and Chief Executive Officer of
the Flint Cultural Center located in Flint, Michigan. He served in that role from 1993-1999.
The Flint Cultural Center is a 30-acre campus encompassing the nine leading cultural
institutions of the Greater Flint Area.

Prior to Flint, Thompson served for four years as the Director and Chief Executive Officer for the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. In essence, Thompson was
responsible for making the Hall of Fame happen, including raising the money for it, working with
architect I. M. Pei to design it, and getting it ready to be constructed.

Before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum experience, Thompson served for seven years as Special Assistant to the President of The Ohio State University. In that role he had staff
responsibilities involving legal issues affecting the university and served as a management
troubleshooter for various administrative departments.

Thompson is a lawyer and an educator. He received his Juris Doctorate summa cum laude from
The Ohio State University and practiced law for a number of years with a large firm in Columbus.
Thompson has a Master of Science in educational administration and counseling from California
State University Los Angeles. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan-Flint in

About Ringling School of Art and Design
For nearly 75 years, Ringling School of Art and Design has cultivated the creative spirit in art
and design students from around the globe transforming our visual world. Founded in 1931 by
noted art collector, real estate magnate, and circus impresario John Ringling, the private,
not-for-profit college is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design
[NASAD http://nasad.arts-accredit.org]
and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools [SACS www.sacscoc.org] to confer the
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree [BFA].

Located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, the picturesque 35-acre campus today includes 69
buildings, and enrolls nearly 1,100 students from 44 states and 28 foreign countries - more than
half of whom reside on the pedestrian-friendly residential campus. Its 130 faculty members are
all professional artists, designers, and scholars who actively pursue their own work outside the
classroom.

During the past two decades, Ringling School has evolved into one of the most prestigious colleges of its kind in the United States, alongside the Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, and the Art Institute of Chicago. With a 2:1 computer to student ratio, it is also recognized as a leader in the use of
technology in the arts.

The School's rigorous curriculum engages innovation and tradition through a strong,
well-rounded, first-year program and a deep focus on the liberal arts. Students pursue one of six
disciplines leading to their BFA degree: Computer Animation, Fine Arts, Graphic & Interactive
Communication, Illustration, Interior Design and Photography & Digital Imaging.

Ringling School students and alumni are heavily recruited throughout the country by a wide
variety of outstanding organizations, including such noted names as Hallmark Cards, CNN Headline News, Sony Pictures Imageworks, DreamWorks, Disney, Electronic Arts, American Greetings, and even the Central Intelligence Agency. Its students and alumni receive many accolades for their superior art and design talents. The College believes passionately in the
development and support of the whole student by preparing each graduate to be both successful in their chosen career, as well as social responsible artist-citizens. As a testament to
the educational principles instilled in them, students donate hours upon hours of their
personal time to volunteering on a myriad of local community public service projects. Their
desire to offer of themselves to support those in need is one of the most significant signs of
their belief in personal involvement and social responsibility.
