Dr. Kalish will discuss the global economic outlook as it relates to the luxury consumer market. This will include an overview of the evolution of the global economy, the likely direction of exchange rates, interest rates, and oil prices, as well as specific reference to the most important markets (Western Europe, Russia, China, Japan, and the US). For each market, he'll talk not only about the economy but also about consumer trends, changing retail environment, and the role of various formats in selling luxury goods. And finally, he will explore "the value revolution" and how this might affect luxury branding.
About Dr. Ira Kalish
Dr. Ira Kalish. Ira recently joined Deloitte as a new global Director within Deloitte Research. He comes from the Retail Forward, a firm dedicated to research and strategy for retailers and their suppliers. At Retail Forward, Ira was Senior Vice President, Chief Economist and Director of the Global Intelligence Program. He led Retail Forward's research and analysis of global economic and retailing issues and has authored in-depth reports on the economies and retailing industries of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Mexico, and South America. His most recent reports were "The Age of Wal-Mart" and "Carrefour at a Crossroads."
Ira has held numerous briefings with executives from companies like Auchan, Boots, Frito-Lay, Gap, GE Capital, J Walter Thompson, Kmart, Levi Strauss, NCR, Nike, and Sears. He has also given presentations in countries around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the UK. He has been widely quoted in the news media as an expert in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, The Economist, The Financial Times, Fortune, and The Far Eastern Economic Review. And, he has appeared on CNN, CBS News, CNBC, CNBC Asia, BBC World Service, and Wall Street Week on PBS.
In addition to his work at Retail Forward, Dr. Kalish has been a Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a Vice President at Bankers Trust Corporation in New York, a Corporate Economist at the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY, and a Research Assistant at the Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Vassar College and a PhD in international economics from Johns Hopkins University.
He is charged with focusing primarily on competitive strategy, the global economy and the impact of global business trends on retailers and suppliers outside of the US.
